Building a self-updating public health data website
Clima dos Vírus · Telling every Brazilian family, in one sentence, which respiratory viruses are circulating in their region.
the work
What we did
- A weather report for respiratory viruses (RSV, flu, rhinovirus, COVID, adenovirus…) covering all of Brazil: 27 states, 439 health regions, 5,570 municipalities
- A Python data pipeline that downloads the Ministry of Health open files every day, recomputes levels and trends and publishes the site, with no human and no AI in the loop
- Levels compared with each territory's own history, correction of reporting delays, daily quality check against Fiocruz figures shown on the site
- Designed for non-experts: "Where do you live?", a per-virus bulletin, a sourced explanation of each virus, mobile first
- Interactive map by state and municipality, clickable sources and dates for every file, daily archive, open JSON API
- Static hosting on Cloudflare Pages, GitHub Actions cron, serverless contact form: zero running cost
Run by BO Community. A site that works on its own, every day, and that any family can understand: this is the kind of project we do this job for.
